Property Description: The Lisselan Estate was built in a simplified French Chateau style between 1851 and 1853 by William Bence-Jones to a design by Lewis Vulliamy. History relates that William Bence-Jones marked out the foundations of the house with the help of his three daughters. Later additions to the house were made in about 1900 by Sir Thomas Neweham Deane. The large glass conservatory was made for the Cork exhibition of 1902 and added onto the house by Reginald Bence-Jones who also added the large library hall in 1907. The Bence-Jones family were responsible for creating the outstanding formal gardens on both sides of the river, which they widened into the lake. The Henry Ford Ancestral Site is located on part of the Lisselan Estate. Henry Ford, son of William Ford was born in America on July 30th, 1863. Henry's father William Ford, along with his grandfather John Ford, were born in Ireland. John Ford was a tenant farmer within the Lisselan Estate farming 30 acres of land.
