OVERVIEW- The Island

A truly unique island resort property situated in the Waterford estuary beside Waterford City. The 310 acre island includes the historic Waterford Castle 4 star hotel, 45 luxury houses and a highly regarded championship golf course.

HISTORY

According to tradition, the first monastic settlement on the Island dates back to the 6th century. Maurice Fitzgerald, cousin of Strongbow, the English Earl of Pembroke sailed past the Island and landed in Waterford in 1160. The Island subsequently became home to the Fitzgerald family for some 800 years.

ABOUT WATERFORD

The name Waterford is derived from an old Norse word Vadrarfjordf that can be traced back to the 9th century. Waterford City was founded in 917AD and developed into a significant urban area during the 10th century and is arguably the oldest area of continuous urban settlement in Ireland.

Waterford is now a vibrant and modern city with all facilities including a regional airport. There is an excellent train service to Dublin which is also accessed by motorway and Cork City and airport are within easy reach.
