Property Description: Echo point house, Beach Road, Clifden is a Victorian house located on the edge of the town. It is completely private from the main road with walled gardens running down to the sea. The house was built by John J. D'Arcy in or around 1904 on land which was held by his father from 1860. John J. D'Arcy was a shopkeeper and timber merchant and therefore used the best quality timber when constructing the house. He was a quirky individual and t give the house a golden foundation he placed a half-sovereign in each corner as the foundations were laid. Some ten years ago, Echo Point House was completely re-roofed (with blue banger slates), re-wired, re-plumbed, dried lined and insulated. During this renovation most of the original character of the house was retained. Many of these features can be seen in the timbers in the doors, panelling, stairs and balustrade and in the tiles in the hallway and downstairs bathroom. At the end of a pathway through the orchard a door in the wall gives access to Clifden Bay where John D'Arcy had a small quay and his boathouse. Sadly the boathouse no longer exists. For many years vines and other fruits were grown in the glass house until the glass section was levelled by a storm a few years ago. The whole area to the rear of the house can be accessed via kitchen back door or via an outside door. The house is heated by oil and the boiler house has electric sockets. Next to the boiler house is a very large storage room. From this storage room, one can walk under the steps to a very large private walled courtyard. From the courtyard there is a access to a large two |
