Newcastle

The old Norman castle at the northern end of the village is Newcastle's visual reminder of its origin as a place name and of its earlier settlers. This is an established and privileged location where the gently rolling hills of ancient farmlands are bounded by old stone walls, a landscape that provides a serene backdrop to a peaceful village. Evidence of ring forts, a holy well, Lyons Estate (once owned by the King of England), Athgoe with its remnants and legends of the ancient Liamhan, the mystical Oughterard, a round tower, a hilltop fortress, an ancient burial ground, Ireland's oldest yew tree, the restored Shackleton Mill, the Village at Lyons, the Hatch and the Hazelhatch, the Grand Canal with its lockes, bridges, canoes, and barges along which there run a most tranquil and scenic towpath that seems to go on forever, and is enjoyed by walkers, joggers, horse riders, cyclists and fishermen.


MAIN STREET NEWCASTLE, A GREAT PLACE TO START

Aylmer Heath opens directly to Main Street Newcastle, where residents have easy access to; a service station, convenience stores, post office, pharmacy, medical centre and churches.

St. Finian's School established in 1825 offers excellent primary education in the village itself, while Rathcoole and Celbridge each have both primary and secondary schools, including 'gael scoil' options.


DUBLIN, IT'S YOUR LOCAL CITY

Rathcoole, just over a mile away is home to supermarkets, banks, restaurants, three pubs, and a selection of shops ranging from baby supplies to the Inniscara Gallery and of course there is Avoca's flagship shop and caf. Shopping centre at City West and Luas Saggart Link. Celbridge is just as close and has its own range of shops and amenities. Liffey Valley is also a close by shopping option for the Aylmer heath resident.
