Monaghan is designated as a hub town in the National Spatial Strategy 2002 - 2020 and is located 53 km north west of Dundalk, the designated gateway for the North-East Region. It is also situated approximately 29 km south west of Armagh, 93 km south west of Belfast and 125 km North West of Dublin. It is strategically located at the intersection of the N2 (Dublin - Derry/Letterkenny Road) and N54 National Road, linking Dublin to the North-West and Belfast to the Midlands, respectively. The town is also located along the key east-west corridor linking Dundalk and Newry to Sligo.
